Tip of the Day - Lying to Your Doctor

So I hope this title has got you interested. This will be a short one today. One of my clients recently reminded me of this little tip. She was talking about how lucky she is that her brother is a doctor, and her nephew is a physical therapist, and so forth. Most of us are not so lucky. We don't necessarily have anyone we trust that we can get a second opinion from when we are afraid or worried our doctor is not giving us the right or best information. Well, my suggestion is this: lie.

So the scenario is that you've hurt your shoulder and your not sure what is wrong and you get an x-ray or an MRI and it comes back and your doctor tells you that you absolutely have to have surgery. You like most normal people aren't totally comfortable just letting someone cut your body open so you wonder. So you tell your doctor that you will think about it but you would like a copy of the MRI or x-ray because your husband/brother/sister/whoever is a doctor/physical therapist/whatever and you want to have them take a look at it. I actually have another client who does this and she says it always works like a charm.

If your doctor is trying to scam you they will immediately start to back-pedal and suggest other alternate options that he was never intending on sharing with you. If he's not, then he will probably have no problem handing the information over to you. Easy and harmless and you know for sure that you are getting the best medical recommendations.

And now you know.

Tell me what you think or if you have had any interesting scenarios like this.

  1. Awesome. I trust doctors about as far as I can throw a frisbee.
